This is the magnificent Chinese Gate on Nelson St, Liverpool. Guarded by two bronze lions, the gateway to Liverpool’s China Town was gifted by our twinned city of Shanghai in 2000. It stands 15 metres tall, and the detail, colours and structure are amazing, including five roofs, 188 hand carved dragons and 12 pregnant dragons symbolising good fortune between the twinned cities. My mum grew up in China town and often talked about the community with great affection, her dad was the warden there in world war two, and she often recalled, with great sadness the refusal of many of the older generation to go down into the bomb shelters for safety during the raids, despite my Granddads best efforts.
This is just one of my many Liverpool landmark themed paintings. Visit my gallery to see the whole collection. and discover how each piece beautfully complements the cities enduring spirit.
